A trip down to National Museum of Singapore

National Museum of Singapore is the nation's oldest museum with a progressive mind. It is a cultural and architectural landmark in Singapore and it hosts innovative festivals and events all year round.

 

 

Singaporean and PRs can enjoy free admission to various museums in Singapore, and so Baby and I took this opportunity to visit the nation’s oldest museum, National Museum of Singapore. I have not been there for ages, if I wasn’t wrong, the last time I visited the National Museum was when I was still in Secondary school days during on a school excursion.  

 

The Street Food Culture of Singapore reflects the ethnic diversity, cross-cultural exchange and cultural innovation of the country. The food gallery recreates the vibrancy of Singapore's street life from the 1940s to the 1980s.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Fashion Gallery reveals the fabric of Singapore society through popular music and displays of apparel, accessories and beauty products used by women from the 1950s to the 1970s.

 

There is a special section of the Fashion Gallery which provides visitors a deeper idea and understanding of the process and techniques of how the traditional cheongsam and other garments are made.

 

The Film and Wayang Gallery is made up of two sections. The film section explores the film production and consumption of films in Singapore from the 1950s to the 1970s. 

 

 In the wayang section, a rich collection of costumes and hand held puppets. The spectacular Xin Sai Le puppet stage which is a Fujian troupe that came from south china to Singapore in the 1930s. It is one of the national treasures in the museum

 

 

 

 

The Singapore History Gallery explores Singapore's 700 years of eventful history starting from 14th century... 

 

I was given a hand-held interactive multimedia device as my audio visual guide. All visitors can freely make their way through various sections of the galleries like Temasek Settlement, Fortress, Syonan-to, New Nation, August 9th and etc... 

 

It was a nostalgic trip for me, and I have gained a deeper understanding my country, Singapore’s history. National Museum of Singapore keeps Singapore’s history alive...
