[FOOD REVIEW] Affordable Japanese Fare at Barashi-Tei

Barashi-Tei is a perfect eatery place for budget-seekers to have decent Japanese fare. It is located at Middle Road, and is within walking distance from Dhoby Ghaut and Bras Basah MRT Stations. To get one's bearings right, it is situated along the same stretch as the famous Rochor Original Beancurd. Barashi-Tei opens till late night, which allows many supper lovers to enjoy a Japanese fix instead of the usual hawker delights.

Barashi-Tei combines tradition and modern culinary aspects, and takes pride in making their food from scratch. The restaurant has an extensive menu of many Japanese favorites, and the sushi is specially flown fresh from Japan's prestigious Tsukiij Fish Market.

We started off with the refreshing home-made Yuzu Drink which is available in both Hot and Cold versions.

It was my first time here at Barashi-Tei, and I found that the food served in this eatery place suited our local taste-buds and they were pretty delicious!

Spicy Salmon Maki (SGD14.80) is a MUST-TRY in Barashi-Tei! I love the addictive crush from the Ebi Tempura wrapped in the centre of the maki, and each bite consisted of a burst of flavours which whetted our appetites for more! Another dish I would recommend strongly is the in-house favourite, the Unagi Salmon Mentai Maki (SGD14.80).

I love the Ika Teriyaki (Grilled Squid with Teriyaki Sauce - SGD16.80), as it was perfectly grilled and I liked the way it was served to us. Both the presentation and taste was good! I did find the sauce a tad bit too sweet for my liking, but it was still within my taste bud's tolerance level. Try this food entrée at Barashi-Tei as you may thoroughly enjoy it!

There is a saying that goes 'Happiness in a Bowl', and I think this is apt to describe the Chirashi Don (SGD26.80) on offer at the eatery. Essentially, thick slices of Sashimi was scattered atop a bowl of perfectly cooked Japanese rice, and the dish offered a myriad of flavors! No wonder the Japanese call this a perfect comfort food! The delicious bowl comes with Miso soup as well, and that is always a plus point for me.

Tamago is a special omelette in Japan, which is made by rolling several layers of cooked egg together. Barashi-Tei makes their very own Yaki Tamago (SGD5) to ensure its authenticity and good taste. They import most of the ingredients directly from Japan. I prefer the tamago here as it is less sweet as compared to other commercial tamago that is normally found in supermarkets.

The Wagyu Beef Bowl (SGD38.80) was fantastic, and each piece of meat was tender and juicy. It literally melted in the mouth, akin to butter on a hot pan! The velvety smooth beef slices were accompanied by a runny onsen egg, and is easily a perfect comfort food for many. It is definitely one of my favorite dishes during the tasting at Barashi-Tei.

Each mouthful of the Gyu Enoki Kushi (Grilled Enoki Mushrooms Wrapped with Beef - SGD3 per stick) was flavorful. The beef skewers generally go well with white rice, or you could have it by itself over a cup of sake/mug of nama biru as a drinking snack!

The Deep Fried Soft Crab (SGD12.80) is a classic Japanese dish which I will never tired of! I enjoyed it best as a side together with my beer!

Barashi-Tei introduced some special Chawanmushi at their eatery, and I was on cloud nine upon knowing that as I am an egg lover!

Uni Chawanmushi (Chawanmushi with Sea Urchin - SGD9.80)

Ikura Chawanmushi (Chawanmushi with Salmon Roe - SGD6.80)

My favorite is still the Classic Chawanmushi (SGD4.80) as it has a light flavor yet tasted good! I love the savory taste from the small chunks of meat that were added to the steamed egg.

The Foie Gras served in Barashi-Tei is worth mentioning as it tasted more subtle and refined as compared to other places I've tried. Barashi-Tei coats their foie gras with Teriyaki sauce, which gives it a hint of sweetness, and has a texture which melts in your mouth! I love the tasty Fois Gras Sushi (SGD15.80 for 2pcs) very much!

No meal is completed without dessert as everybody loves sweet treats! We ended our tasting with some gelato, and there were several flavors to choose from the menu, such as Avocado, Green Tea, Black Sesame, Mango and Yuzu - SGD4.80 per scoop!

I was glad that I had tried the Mango and Green Tea flavours, as both of them tasted pretty good. The green tea was rich and the Matcha aroma won us over. Mango lovers should not give this Mango Gelato a miss as it tasted uber refreshing.
